Build Suggestions -Performance machine

Alright, as you can see from the link in my sig I usually use a gaming laptop. Most of my time is spent in that forum, however at this time I am looking to build a desktop rig & have the build below in mind.

I am very familiar with overclocking (which I plan on doing), cooling solutions...etc... I am not interested in SLi. I have found the performance increase to be too low for the cost, which is why I did not choose a 680 board w/2 16x slots. My only future addition may be a Physics card, once more games support it. I also have an audio card already (Audigy 2 ZS Plat).

any suggestions would be appreciated, as the other forums I have been to have met with responses limited to "nVidia sucks", "don't go Intel, they suck". Obviously those responses offer no help in making a decision.

I will take advice on any part of this build. Currently the cost sits @ $2,050.00. That includes shipping & does not include mail in rebates (I've found half the time you never get them). I did not include my selections for my fans, cathodes...and other junk that is not that important...

Looks good...does that price account for the 22nds price drops? Or you just can't wait three weeks and need to build now? Only thing I would change is the dvd drive, I'd go with lite-on 20x. But its not that big of a deal. Either way, good luck with the build!
 
I know the 6750's are coming out w/ the price drops on the 22nd. I am trying to get the build in earlier, as that single price change will not really affect my build all that much.

I would go with the quad core but the performance increase is not even noticable since the 2 additional cores are not even being used at this point (at least with the software I use). Not even Supreme Commander utilizes more than 2 cores at this point.

I chose that particular DVD drive since it has lightscribe & I hate writing on discs by hand lol.

It'll for the price you're getting the E6700 you could get the Q6600 quad or the E6850 3ghz dual and even save money, i would get the antec 900 rather than the Thermaltake, a lite on dvd burner is better and the price difference isn't that much, get a real psu those hiper sucks other than that is fine

I think I will getthe Lite-On drive. I am concerned that 620 watt PSU recommended would be cutting too close with my loads, esp with overclocking, & a total of 4 HDD's (2 500 GB/2 160GB (RAID 1) (archive drive))
 
I was looking into the 680 boards. The reason I did nt go for them
-Was not interested in SLi
-The reviews on this particular board have shown it has an excellent overclocking rputation.

If you have a particular reason I should look more into the 680 boards let me know.


the other boards I have been to have replied with "Intel sucks, go nvidia" "Go intel, nVidia sucks" "ATI is bad" "nvidia is bad"...Unfortunately personal preference and simple statements like that do little to help me in making a decision.
 
If you're going sli with the geforce 8 series then you'll need more than the corsair or the hiper, something around 850 watts with at least 50 amps
 
He actually mentionned he had not intentions to SLI. As for the Corsair 620HX, I am quite sure it would be plenty to provide power for all you plan to put in there.
 
yes as I stated earlier I don't plan on SLi. Initially I was, but after serious consideration (looking at test comparisons) I saw little benefit. the price to performance value just isn't there. that is one of the reasons I chose the P35, instead of the 680 series boards.

I wish there was a definitive way to tell what your power requirements are going to be. I know the 8800 ultra draws 300+ under load, that coupled with an oc'ed e6700( I plan on around 3.4GHz), Oc'ed RAM, 4 Hard Drives, 2 optical drives, an augigy 2 ZS Plat, several 120MM LED fans, 2 cold cathodes, & my G15 keyboard I would be pretty darn close to maxing out a 620 watt PSU.

thanks a lot. with my complete configuration I am showing 587 watts of current draw overclocked. 623 under a TDP of 100% (which is rare)
 
Well I took the plunge a little earlier. Here is what I ended up with... I just went with a 700 in the event I decide to grab a Physics processor later on when more games support it.

ATM those Phyx cards are useless and is like wasting money i'd rather suggest you to wait till then most likely there will be even better models by then
 
yeah that is why I did not get one, though I do play COV, which can utilize the card.

i figure once DX10 gets fully adopted Physics will start to play a more important role
 
-660/2.3GHz clocks vs 575/1.8GHz
-The Ultra was not that much more than the GTX
-I am looking to upgrade my 32" 1360x768 to a 1920x1200 37" so Iwant the best performance I can get in a single card.
-I have the money
