Ok a couple of questions. I am building a computer for my brother. He won't be doing much gaming. When I say much, probably none but I'll throw a gpu and see what you think. He will mostly be using it for internet, downloading,etc... Normal stuff. I am going to wait for prices to drop too. I already got monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers.

You could skip the Windows and get an easy to use Linux distro for free, since he won't be doing any/a lot of gaming. Something in the lines of SuSe 10.1 or Ubuntu.

You dont need those high end parts for just basic tasks. I would go with a Sempron 64, 1GB DDR400, an XP Home.

I also would look at a different case, but if he doesnt really care about the look then it will be fine.
 
Now that I think about it can't I go with an intel 805 they are going to be under $100 aren't they?

and the prices of the pd805 are supposed to go down at the end of July when core 2 duo comes out. the optical drive is good but im sure you can get a better one for cheaper but i dont know any.
 
ok i have a few words of advice... don't go with the AMD processor since he wont be doing much gaming at all and you can find a good intel for about $100-150 and theyre better for multitasking.

If you're going to add a graphics card i would go with a case with a bigger power supply maybe somewhere around 400w or 450w. Or you can even buy a case without a power supply then buy a good one separately.

The hardrive seems fine if you want that much space.

Good choice on the RAM 1GB(2 x 512mb) that is good because the two cards will give you more performance than one. But instead of going with that brand for that much you could get a pack of two 512 mb sticks from Kingston which is a good brand for around $85.

The motherboard seems a little cheap, since its the motherboard and all you should spend a littl more on that since you save $200 with the intel CPU and get a better motherboard one thats compatible with intel since the motherboard is the heart of your computer and you dont want to cheap out on that.

And finally the OS seems fine. Windows XP Home Edition is a fine choice that will be good for your brother's uses. Don't go with Linux.

But then again he isn't going to do any gaming so what's the need for Windows XP? A Linux based OS has better security, is more stable and is usually completely free of charge.
 
Yes, but he doesn't know how to run linux. I don't have any experiance with linux and he wanted windows.:rolleyes:
