My sister is buying a computer and i reaslised i could build one for the same price with better parts.
So here goes I need

A motherboard
A PSU
A Case
A Cpu
Dvd burner
Ram
A video card
And a hard drive

Is this all i need? Its going to be a core2duo build, ill be buying all the parts off of ebay. Is there any wires and stuff i have to buy? It would be a shame if i couldnt even build it when all the parts arrived, my sister would be in tears, so this is really important. And shes on a budget.

Also when buying a PSU does it have to be a certain one for the CPU? Ive seen heaps of nice ones with SATA 2, ect but they say pentium 4.
Thanks to all those who help.

You should know this isn't exactly the right section for asking about recommendations for parts.
Also, why are you buying off ebay? I don't like buying heaps of things off ebay, I'd rather get it off newegg or somewhere like that. What's the budget, and what is the system going to be used for?

I would definitely go with newegg.com for all the parts... its not worth saving a couple bucks getting them used on ebay with no guarantee or anything. Also so we can start looking at what you would want, what is your sister going to be using the machine for? and what is her budget?

all parts from Ebay might be risky, but who knows.

Here are some less frequent minor things that you might wanna consider.

Consider whether you'd need a floppy drive. I don't hehe

Make sure your PSU's got the right motherboard plug. Depending on your motherboard, it can be 24 pin or 20 pin. But it's most likely a 24.

And remember to google some PSU calculator. I forgot to do that, and I ended up having to replace my PSU. But for basic usage, PSU usually shouldn't be a problem.

Depending on the type and size of the case, some cases might need cable extension. If your case does need, customer reviews usually would complain about that, so just find out from reviews.

For your psu again, make sure it has some sata connectors, as it seems that you're likely to get a SATA drive. But you can always get those small cable convertors if the PSU doesn't have sata connectors, and that budget forces you to use a crappy old psu.

Finally, usually not a problem again is, make sure your mobo's got ethernet and sound outlet.

Are you sure you can build this computer? What's the exact budget of the build. Also, don't get the parts off ebay, it's too risky and too complicated. Buy them off of newegg, it's much better. Also, what is your sister going to do with the computer. Normal internet/homework/music, gaming?

sup man, u sure u wanna risk giving ur sis a comp? mine usually breaks it within a month!

if ur buying new components, look for ATX 2.2 PSUs,

case - I suppose you may even be able to find a decent one that does the job at the closest garage sale etc. any will do as long as u fit the mobo an psu in. (ie 2nd hand =cheap and will do the job)

burner - if the mobo u choose has SATA cable connection, then get the pioneer 212bk (or sumthin like that but make sure its sata) they cheap here in aust ($60 or sumthin). it does dual layer as well i believe, or if u goin real ceap, then get 2nd hand too there

ram - if she's runnin xp, and no games, etc then i dont see the need for more than one 512Mb stik of cheap stuff

video - if as above, then look for video on board the mobo otherwise as budjet permits

HDD - i always like to get the best possible hard drive as these are the bottlenecks as well as the biggest chance of failing. if you want really rast then go western digital raptor 150Gb (but they are about 250-300 here in aust)

Moved to Desktop Computers. With regards to the PSU, there's no special requirement for Core 2 Duos as opposed to P4s. Just make sure that it provides sufficient power (both total wattage and +12V output), and obviously has the required connectors.

im with the other guys, if your sis isnt gonna use it for anything special. just look in the for sale section here or craigslist in you area or the classifieds in the paper...less headache for you and her, if all she will do is listen to mp3s, post on myspace, im and just surf the net
