Building a computer for xmas...

Hello,

I'm getting a new computer at Xmas, looking to build one myself however, as much as i know about operating a computer, fixing computers etc I don't actually know much about hardware so i was hoping i could get some advice please. I'm from the UK so any suggested buys if they were UK ones then it would be appreciated please.

What i want it for...

Just want the computer to run fast, act as a media server to an extent for my PS3 but it will have its own HD monitor separately but any well priced 24" or over HD monitors then free feel to suggest :D. I've got a large music collection and have ripped all of my movies onto my previous hard drives so I will put them all onto the computer and just want it for general stuff. I would want it to play at HD quality e.g. I had a blue ray quality movie I would want that to be displayed at the full potential and i may use it to run some music software e.g. cubase.

How much?

About £400ish I can extend a bit more but in that budget would be ideal

Just having a general look of items this is what i've come up with...

£84 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152177 - core2duo processor

£62.99 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/176559 - graphics card

£57.99 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173804 - Hard drive

£16.99 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169683 - DVD drive

£29.00 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/136491 - case

£54.00 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167788 - motherboard

£55 - http://www.electronicmegastore.com/...1.html?zenid=c317959b68a589500c9668234a4442e8 - RAM

leaves me with about £40 for a fan which i haven't looked at but as previously stated ideas/thoughts etc would be much appreciated!

Thank you

Do you already have a PSU you're going to use?

Nope, i'm currently having a browse for one or if anyone can suggest of any good ones. The case i was looking at has a PSU but apparently the ones which come with cases generally aren't the best.

PSU come with case usually rubbish. Get that OCZ 500W or Antec 500W

CPU + Mobo. I would recommend you go for AMD instead as intel would end LGA 775 socket. And go for DDR3 RAM. easier to upgrade in future.
CPU - Athlon IIx4 620

or PhenomII x2 550
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166518

Mobo - MSI 770-C45
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/165438

RAM - DDR3 RAM
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/178943
http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=39115&tid=frooct

Video card: I recommend 4670 instead. Cheaper and faster than GT220

Case - I recommend Casecom 6788 as budget case

Or just get £18 - 20 gaming case

Cheers for your help people its appreciated.

DaisyMTC just looking at the set up i probably sound stupid here but any reason that you would suggest those processors over core2duo's? (someone said that I should get a core2duo) or are those processors core2duo's and i'm just being stupid?
The set up you advised i take it that whole set up would fit together?

And also for wireless/bluetooth I take it i just need a PCI adaptor?

Thank you

Intel core 2 duo are good processor. However, intel already switch to LGA 1156/ 1366 for higher end, which means that they would stop developing on CPU for LGA 775. so it would limit your upgrade ability in future.

AMD have no plan to change their AM3 socket. As far as price/performance factor concern, AMD are as good as C2D/ C2Q.

you can get USB adapters for both wireless and bluetooth. i would go with an internal (PCI) wireless card if i were you.
