hi, im looking to build a computer and i dont want to spend over £150 im hoping i can build a better computer than my current which is:- pentium 4
2.2ghz, 1024mb ram, ati radeon 9600 series 128bit, motherboard name is
GA-8SIML REV 1.0, hard drives are combined about 120gb dont know how to find out speed of them. i want this computer mainly for abit of gaming up to the standard of spore, world of warcraft, football manager 2009, connecting to my tv to watch hd programs.

would it be best to build a pc myself or buy a ready-made one according to my budget? would it be possible to end up with processor speed of 3ghz+, with a decent graphics card to play those games and decent motherboard.

first of all what type of motherboard should i be looking to buy?

£150 to build new, not possible.
For £150, you would be best to upgrade your graphic card. E.g. 2600XT AGP/ HD3850 AGP
A decent build need at least £400.

You could probably make a computer with 150 (without monitor) but the specs wouldn't be too great. I made a £150 last year and that was without post and packaging. It was:

AMD ATHLON 64 X2 4400 2.3
2GB RAM 667
And an ASROCK motherboard and a £13 case with a low-end 300W psu. You won't get good specs with 150 quid.

THIS CAN BE DONE if you spend 7 more pounds than you originally planned too.

you would need to use your existing cd drive, chassis and power supply to maintain the budget.

this would be a fairly quick and capable system for the price, and it would meet all of your needs :)

megahertz myth (thanks to intel many years ago)

Its not all about the actual clock speed anymore, people still seem to think this (thanks to intel for marketing the old pentium 4's by their clock speed instead of their actual performance index)
todays speed is from the amount of execution cores, the bus speed, and the archetecture of the processor.

example : dual core pentium D 2.0 GHz is much much faster than a single core pentium 4 prescott running at 3.6GHz
