building a computer

im building a computer from spare parts(all parts are compatible). the only thing is its not booting up. it gets power for a couple secs then turns off. i noticed the GPU isnt getting power and while looking at that i noticed i forgot to plug in the 4 pin atx power connecter right by the cpu. my psu doesnt have one. it has an 8 pin that would fit but I have a copper heat sink over some chips right next to the mobo connector so it wont fit.

would this cause it to not boot up?

MOBO
asus m2n-e
RAM
4x1gb ddr2 800
GPU
nvidia geforce 8500gt

EDIT: did alittle digging turns out it is the cpu power connector so yea it would keep it from booting.

next question. can i get an adapter to take the 8 pin and convert to 4 pin?

what power supply do you have? If you have an 8 pin connector then it will break off into 2- 4pin connectors.

Ok, just researched that model a little bit more, when it was new there was an 8pin to 4pin adapter cable included with it. If you don't have it anymore, you will need to go to a computer store and get one or order one if there isn't one near you.
