So i got lots of spare parts kicking around and I am trying to get a computer working. I have everything running fine except a DVD drive at this point. Here is the deal.

It is an IDE based system. It has a working CD drive. I installed a DVD drive (pulled it out of a similar Dell system). The computer wouldn't recognize it in explorer or in a search for new hardware. I removed the CD drive and just left the DVD drive in. Now it appears in windows explorer as a DVD drive in place of the CD drive (E: ) but it will not read DVD's (insert DVD and it just keeps asking me to insert a disk).

I don't have a driver disk. I haven't worked on an IDE system in a long time so I am feeling like I am missing something, any ideas?

Where to start eh?

On the CD drives: if you are going to run 2 CD drives you need to make sure that the jumpers are set to master/slave (one is master one is slave) or cable select. Put them on the secondary IDE port. The OS should then recognize both drives. Be sure you get the model numbers off of both drives so that if the OS doesn't set correct drivers you can go and find them.

Here is the PDF manual for that MB P4XB
