Building a Gaming Computer

I have used newegg for years and I am going to piece together a top-of-the-line machine and wondered if there is anything I need to keep in mind when making this computer other than what I already know:

I know I need to make sure the motherboard lines up with socket type of processor/RAM and make sure the powersupply has sufficient watts.

Anything else to keep in mind? I am looking to spend no more than $900
 
Just remember to install the brass standoffs into your case. some come with a few preinstalled, but line up your board with them and see where you can put more in. the more you have in the sturdier your motherboard will be, you don't want it bending when you have a massive cooler in there.
 
$900 is not 'top of the line'...

Is your $900 included OS? Or hardware only?

If it is hardware only, you would probably after core i5 760 + P55 mobo + 4GB DDR3 RAM + 5850 1GB / GTX 460 1GB

Or Phenom II x4 955 + 890GX/ 890FX mobo + 4GB DDR3 RAM + 5850 1GB

If you need to include OS, probably with 5770 /5830 instead.
 
I'd suggest waiting for the release of AMD's Radeon HD 68xx series this Friday. Not just because you might want to go with one of those (6850 or 6870) but because the prices of the Radeon HD 5xxx series and GTX 460 cards might come down a bit.
 
'Top of the line' is a broad term as there's many different things you can put in a top level computer. It's probably going to run a lot higher than 900 if you plan to go all out and make a powerful machine. I would check for deals using ebay, pricewatch, google products, craigslist, etc to get the best price on everything. First, figure out what you need and don't need, making sure all the parts are fully compatible, and shop accordingly. Good luck.
