Building a new computer

I'm going to build a new computer and it's not because I need it, it just give me something to do because I'm 65 and I figure why not. Anyway it's going to be an AMD 8150 with the FX-990 Motherboard so I can have 18 USB ports and I'll use most of them if not all of them. USB HUBs just suck period. I would like to overclock it just a tad just so I can say I did it. I'm going to put an Antec Liquid CPU Kuhler 920 so I feel safe. I am looking at Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB (2x4GB) 1866MHz for RAM but I'm not sure. I'm going to use a Video - ATI Radeon 5750 1 Gig but will upgrade it I'm sure because I want this computer for games. I have been playing Quake4 ever since it came out and haven't found anything else I like so I guess I'll just have to change my ways and if anyone know of a game like Quake4 that will take advantage of my new computer let me know and I'm open to any suggestion for my new build but I just like AMD.

Best reason if ever there was one!
Can I ask, what is your budget? Do you want graphics maxed out? Do you have any experience in building?
Personally I wouldn't go liquid cooling just like that. If you're just going to overclock a little bit, air cooling will be just fine. On the other hand, liquid cooling is supposedly great. :D

I recently made a thread about building one too, and it does have some suggestions for specific parts: http://www.computerforum.com/213098-two-builds-im-special-like.html
Of course, change the motherboard to whatever you want, and go with the 8150 instead of my choice if you want to. Just be aware that the 8150 is just a higher clocked 8120, so if you want to save some money you can get the 8120 and clock that higher than stock with no problem. :)
Will check more when I get home from work. Good luck!

Intel is faster but an AMD will do fine, but if you must get amd then i'd wait a few months for the next generation of the FX processor called piledriver, it has some good fixes from what we've seen so far off early revisions used in the trinity APU.

Like he said, got a budget in mind, there's a lot more for the build than the 3 or 4 parts you mentioned.

good for you lostsoul,i'm 54 and just finished my 1st build,it was way easier than expected, just use quality parts, make sure they are compatible,
check here or mfg websites for cpu/ram that mobo will accecpt, and you will be on your way, also i waited for specials did a bit of pricing before i started
abd saved a bundle, good luck, bye for now

Lost from old age

I didn't know that the 8150 was just an 8120 that was overclock. I should do more research on this. My budget is unlimited. I've single handedly built and loaded over a thousand computers but that was a long time ago. I retired from the computer field 10 years ago and have I fallen behind. I do a new build about every 18 months. But not working in the field anymore I really feel lost sometime. I figure using a liquid cooler is overkill but it should be OK since money isn’t my problem. I want to play a couple of new games and see how it looks before I buy another video card. I like AMD but I do have an Intel PC as well. Maybe I need to re-think this and I also know when you wait for the new stuff and you put it all together, the next day their coming out with newer stuff so you know how that goes. I bought an Antec 750 Watt power supply (Earthwatt) and I have a SATA 3 1TB HD. I have a SSD in my AMD 955 but I'm sure sure if I want to buy another one because that SATA 3 1TB HD which isn't a SSD is pretty fast.

Sure, new stuff comes all the time. But if you build now, the computer will still last quite a while. :) And personally I believe that is one good reason to pick AMD. Ivy Bridge will probably be Intel's last CPU generation on socket 1155. AMD will still release Piledriver (which hopefully is great) on socket AM3+. That means you can upgrade to AMD's newest without having to switch out your motherboard as well. I could be wrong on the Ivy Bridge thing of course, but for most games graphics card is more important than CPU anyway. :)

Lost you rock bro, I thought guys like John or I were the older group but you make me feel younger :). I don't no exactly why you need so many usb ports but you do. If you were in the computer field you will be just fine, sounds to me as if you just want some advice on the new stuff. And it seems everytime the wind blows something new is out. I'll give you my opinion and it's just that mine.

Case Corsair 400R (so many to choose from, but I like this one.) $90

CPU i5 3570K $190 @ micro center or $229 other places

CPU cooler CM212 is a great buy @ $30
High end coolers like a Noctua will run around $80-100
Then there's always water looped systems, but this can get costly and I don't think it's necessary unless you plan on getting into big OC.

Mobo Gigabyte UD3H or UD5H for more usb ports which sounds like this is what you want. If you don't need multiple PCi slots and some extra features you can get a more economical DS3H version. $110-190

8GB min. or you can run 16GB just because you can :). Your choice, maybe corsair or Gskill $60-100

GPU this is a hard choice ,strickly on my preference GTX 670 FTW version, but if you need multiple monitors more ram go with a amd 7970. If you don't want to spend 400+ for a card you can go with a amd 7850/7870 or a GTX 570 or even a GTX 480 at a great price. So many choice and most will not be a bad decision. You need to decide what you want to spend and get that card in the budget look at both amd/nvidia with an open mind. You will have fan boys on each side. I said the 670 only cause I've been running a amd and wanted to try something different. Side note I've never had driver issues with mine.
$200-400

Blue Ray or DVD LG, Samsung, Asus $20-80

PSU Corsair very popular along with pc cooling although not as popular, I've had good luck with the price conscience OCZ 700 modular. $50-80

SSD if you want a quick boot up or load games on this drive, it might make it a few milliseconds quicker. I've not jumped on this band wagon nor have I ever tried them so my opinion is one sided. Someone with more knowledge can help you here better.

HDD Seatgate Barracuda or WD Black Caviar 1TB 7200RPM 64MB Cache 6.0 GB/S or bigger depending on how much storage you need. I prefer WD myself.

OS Whatever you decide, Win 7 professional is a good choice.

Hope my .02 helped you out. But then again it's only .02..... :good:

Yes I've been around in the computer field for quite a while. I have over 10 grand in computer equipment with two 28 inch monitors which are great for Netflix and games. I have a USB HUB with 14 ports which I max out and I don't like HUB's. What happen to me is I didn't use it so I lost it and that's why I value people’s option on this site. There is a lot to think about. But I wanted to say Thanks for the input.
