Building a new computer

I'm building a new computer so I can put Windows 11 on it and was wondering if I should put McAfee on it as well? But doesn't Windows 11 have a built in anti virus software?

Just use the built in windows defender. Mcafee is junk along with Nortons. If you want to use something paid then use Malwarebytes.

I have always used AVG free but not sure if it is needed now with windows defender. You just have to ignore them trying to get you to pay.

M\acafee is the WORST AV possible anyone with any Knowledge of it is aware of this

The chap who brought us the software

John McAfee, the creator of the McAfee antivirus software, died by suicide in a Spanish prison on June 23, 2021, while awaiting extradition to the United States on tax evasion charges. He was 75 years old. The Spanish court had ruled that he would be extradited to face charges related to failing to file tax returns for several years despite earning substantial income.

I have always used AVG FREE my son, Bitdefender for gaming

Macafee reasons to avoid

  1. System Performance Impact: Historically known for being resource-heavy, especially on older or less powerful systems.
  2. Bloatware & Bundling: Often comes pre-installed on new PCs and can feel like unwanted bloat.
  3. Aggressive Marketing: Frequent nags for upgrades or renewals.
  4. False Positives: Some users report more false positives than with other AVs.
  5. Mixed Real-World Protection: While test lab results are decent, some power users find real-world threat detection to be lacking compared to Bitdefender, Kaspersky, or ESET.
  6. Privacy Concerns: Some critics have raised flags over data collection practices.

Expert & Power User Consensus:

  • IT professionals and power users often avoid McAfee in favor of lighter, more configurable options like:
    • Bitdefender
    • Kaspersky (if geopolitics isn’t a concern)
    • ESET NOD32
    • Windows Defender (Microsoft Defender) — surprisingly solid since Windows 10.
    • Malwarebytes — as a secondary on-demand scanner.
