building a new computer

as i said i am starting to gather the parts to build myself a new computer. a friend of mines dad will be getting me some free parts from his work(hes a computer tech). they might not be the best but they will be free. as soon as he gives me these parts i will let you guys know the specs. this is where i need your help. im not really a gamer. i want a computer where i can surf the web fast, listen to music, watch movies, and do 5 other things all at once without freezing up or skipping.lol this is the best i could explain it. i want a cp that can do alot of things at once and do them fast. multitasking? i know for sure i am getting a case from him which is going to be plain but i dont care what my cp looks like. and i already know what monitor, mouse, keyboard i am going to buy. i need your help strictly on the insides. whats some good parts i need to look for to make my computer run how i need it to run?

as soon as i get my hands on some of the parts i will give you guys the specs and you can tell me what to use and what not to use.

this i do not know yet. a motherboard was mentioned, a hard drive, memory i plan to buy on my own so i can get alot of it, CPU was not talked about, graphics card i will probably have to buy on my own, i should be getting a power supply, and i will prbably be buying my own cd/dvd drive because i want to be able to burn dvds and stuff.
 
i have cable. but if i have a crappy computer my internet still wont be fast. thats why i need a new fast computer. not new internet
 
Whats your budget? and if your just doing basic tasks i presum onboard graphics would be fine..
 
my budget will depend on what you guys tell me i need after i give you guys the specs on the parts im getting then il need you guys to tell me what i should use and what i shouldnt. then i will give you my budget. i dont want to tell you i have a 1000$ budget but i only have to buy 2 things.
 
while i have some of you guys on here. wheres somewhere i can buy a 27" monitor or bigger for cheap. i was looking at some tv monitors that can be used as cp monitors. are those good? they were around 450$
 
if there a "Tube" t.v then no. If there an "LCD" then yes. give us link so i can check respons time, etc...
 
Well, to starf off, you have a lot of "maybes" "i should be getting" "i think im getting". It would be good to know exactly what pieces your friend's dad is going to give you, then we can help you more on what other pieces you should get. just trying to help :D
 
Free parts will possibly cost you more in the long run if they aren't the newer things on the market. Reason is you might have to buy older pieces to go with them and then you are just spending money on out dated technology.
 
ok guys i gotcha. as soon as i get my hands on the parts i will let u guys know. then we can go from there. can i get an opinion on the tv/monitor that i posted. is it good/bad?
 
looks okay to me, but I'm no monitor/TV pro. I know that Dells are good but they are a higher price point, Dell's monitors are a good bang for the buck, really good quality.
