Ok fellas I want to build a computer for my pal here in Canada for $1934 canadian. Here is the lowdown:

pny 7900 gtx 512MB=$505 ebay
x2 3800AMD= $330 canadacomputers.com
tsunami dream case= $144 canadacomputers.com
Geil 2GB memory dual channel=$205 ebay
Acer 19" LCD=$230 canadacomputers.com
200GB maxtor 7200 rpm hard drive= $85 canadacomputers.com
500W power supply=$90 canadacomputers.com
DVD/CDwriter= $40 canadacomputers.com
keyboard & mouse= $35
Speakers= $100
Asus a8n premium sli Mobo= $185 canadacomputers.com

Is this a deal or what for less than a grand. Please guys if you know anywhere that beats these prices please let me know. Take the shipping costs into consideration. Thank you.

Well if you could provide more detailed links to the products it would be easier to judge.

I would personally either:

1, downgrade to a 7900GT

2, wait until the prices drop and get an X2 4200+ instead

Be careful what you buy off eBay.

Try the tigerdirect.com canadian website.

dont forget a sound card, with the gtx video card I assume he plans on using it for gaming.. the x-fi extreme music would be a nice card.. Maybe consider getting a 7900GT instead of GTX?? or is your buddy set on the GTX?? the 7900GT is still a very powerful card..

also, does your buddy really plan on using SLI?? if not, then why blow $100??

you can get the Asus A8N5X NF4 board for less than $100 at canadacomputers.com and it will give you the same performance. The money saved there will pay for most of the sound card which is around $140 cnd

definately reconsider the motherboard.. I mean if he/she plans on using sli in the future... don't you think by that time there will be something better out anyway?? I still to this day understand why those that dont use sli waste their money(atleast waste their money "IMO" but hey to each their own.. I just don't understand it). The 7900GT is a great card for nearly half the price if you can find a good deal.. don't count it out.. I mean at half the price with damn good performance.. might be worth savin a few bucks

*edit* damn, #2 beat me to it on the sound card.. I wasted time searching the canadacomputers site checking cnd prices before submitting

Newegg doesn't ship to Canada, do they? And as stated earlier, might wanna wait till the prices drop in mid to late July.

whoooaaaaa now, ok...when the gpu is the one thing with the biggest price tag in your lineup, you have to ask yourself some questions. for one, "will i get the most out of it with all of the other components?"...in other words, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. also, "am i going to NEED such a ridiculous gpu for what im trying or want to do?".

i dont say this to make judgements on your decisions, because im sure youre well aware of your situation, im just giving a friendly reminder to help your wallet. in the end, you may want to opt for that card, and the ball is totally in your court, or your friends...but if i were in the same situation, i wouldnt go as far as getting that particular card.

I think the displayed build list is pretty balanced myself. I would say the majority of newer, new, and future games are heavily gpu bound. As long as you have X processor or better, you're fine. The X2 3800+ is the weakest of the dual cores, but definitely is no slouch either. IMO a 7900GT would compliment it well.

Btw, check out my sig for my planned build. Might switch the case with an Antec Sonata 2, yet guess what still would be the most expensive component? The 7600GT. I would say a 3800+ single core and a 7600GT are very equal/balanced in terms of cpu+gpu and gaming.

Ya a single core is good for now but games are starting to become multitthreaded and youll need a dualcore for that. and i would get the 7900GT instead of the GTX its still a good card and is alot cheaper.
