building a pc and static

First question I have is if you were to wear a pair of latex gloves would those prevent any static?

Second, I'm still not very clear on how all this electricty thing works. Everyone says stay grounded, well you aren't going to be floating in the air while building a pc so I know that they mean somethng I'm not catching. I've also heard hold on to the case before and while you install something, that would take up a hand which would make things more difficult it would seem, also if there was some static while you were just going to touch the case wouldn't it be carried through the case and into everything else?

If someone could describe what point electricity is stopped or just how it all works I would greatly appreciate it.

Well if you want to be really safe, you can buy a wrist strap that you putn around your rist, and connect it to the chassis of the case. But what I do (and a bunch of other people), is to touch the case before working on anything inside, and hold the case when your touching components.

Static damage is almost something of the past with newer computers, as with anti-static bags. If you can build up enough static to destroy a piece of computer hardware then you might just be in trouble.

True, but if your house is all carpet and its winter, you should still take precautions. I would simply touch the case before you work on it.

My house is all carpet and it is winter (9 months of the year it seems) and I've never had any static porblems. If you want to discharge yourself before working on a computer go ahead, won't harm anything. But in my mind I find it a little useless.

yea, i generaly dont worry about static too much, and in my 4 years of messing with computers, i havnt had a problem.

yeah, i always work on my computer on the carpet and i havn't seem to have much problems...though one day I was super staticy..dono why, any metal thing i touched caused a discharge, so i stayed away from my computer that day =)

ok, I'll just play it safe and hold onto the case and if I need another hand to help me put something in I'll have someone else come help me while they hold onto the case also.

My coat is alwase staticy, every day after school I touch my pc case and a giant spark will fly from my finger. But what is puzziling me is you say that you should touch your case, your case all by itself is not grounded. Wouldnt you have to have the powersupply installed and plugged in? ;)
