Building an AMD, ATI Computer

I am working on building a new computer. I can actually get it at under or around $500, it won't be top of the line, but it will dwarf the hell out of my old system. Here are the parts i am looking to buy and install at the moment.

I am planning on using the hard-drive out of my old computer (not sure if that's a good idea) and i already own a very good sound card. Please let me know if i'm forgetting anything and if you have any suggestions, feel free to let me know.

Thanks.

i'd upgrade the videocard to an ati 4850. the rest seems fine.
als you could upgrade your psu to get some more space for future upgrades. but that depends on what your planning to do with this build.

yeah i agree, for teh extra you would be better going for the 4850.

btw i dont know how much that processor is you posted because it says "Deactivated item" but have you considred a Phenom?

because here you have the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ 3.2GHz at $119

and theres a AMD Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 for the same price.

personaly i would choose a Quad over that dual core anyday.

I would go for a slightly higher voltage PSU, like a 650, that way, you wont have as much to worry about when you upgrade in the future.

For the CPU, I would definitely get a Phenom. The reason the Quad mentioned by Neva is because it's an older (B2) stepping, which had a nasty bug that could *in extremely rare circumstances* cause a system lockup. The B3 stepping CPUs (8x50 and 9x50) have this bug fixed, along with some other improvements. The B2 stepping Phenoms were a flop, and they're selling at a low price for those who want a cheapass quad - they're good for the price, but IMO you'd be better off with a B3 quad or even a tri-core. If budget matters, there's nothing wrong with getting a tri-core, that's what they're there for - to offer good multitasking capabilities at a lower price than a quad.

Ok, thanks. I still don't understand why i would need a quad core. I can get a 3.0 Ghz dual core with 2 1mb caches for $84. Maybe if i understood how multicore processors worked, i would see the difference.

Yea, they are good cases. I had a black one, but sold it about 3 months ago. But I have ordered about 6 of them and havent had any problems. I swapped out the fans for higher CFM ones and added a 120 front fan.
