Building First Computer

First off, I'm new to this, so this post may sound kind of dumb.

I'm in college now, and am studying computer science engineering (programming for now, not exactly sure on what the future holds).

I'm currently doing all of my work on my laptop (HP Pavilion dv7-1245dx) which I got in the summer of '09.

As for price and specs, I'm not sure as I don't really know how much computing power I need for the future. As of now, the code isn't really extensive, but I know it will be in the future. I make around $250 every two weeks with my job. I live in the dorms and have no car, therefore the money isn't really being used very often.

I'd like to build something that is better than my laptop, and I'd also like to have the potential to play games on it. I'm more of a console gamer, but mainly because I've never had a computer that could handle games.

I know this sounds very vague, but since I'm new to the computer building/computer science aspects, I'm really not entirely sure what it required.

EDIT: Also, I forgot to mention that I get the OS through my school (Windows 7).

You need a monitor/peripherals I assume? You could do much worse than building a solid high-quality PC for about $500.
 
I hate double posting.

I feel like maybe I didn't give enough information the first time though.

I plan on using this computer for coding, light gaming, and multimedia. Therefore I figure I'll need a Quad core (for compiling and multitasking)?

I understand most components of the computer, but the one part I need help in is picking a motherboard. I know they're based on processor, but I'm not really sure what "features" a good motherboard would have.
