I'm from Australia so would prefer to buy from an Australian site.

I'm trying to build my own gaming desktop. Nothing elite, just something to play basic MMO's on medium graphics. Have a budget of $400 that I am hoping will cover every I need, already have a monitor.

Does anyone have any advice or tutorials I can start with? I looked at a couple of vids on Youtube and the hardest part seems to be knowing which ports to connect the power supply into. And finding out which parts are going to fit perfectly into your cpu case.

Any help would be great guys, it's all new to me so if you can help at all that would be great. :)
 
^ Other than the OS, what else would I need to buy? but yeah, $400 is generally what I want to spend.
 
So how do you go about making sure the parts that you buy are compatible? and how do you pick the right sized parts for your tower?
 
The CPU and motherboard need to have the same socket, the current intel one is lga 1150, and the current amd ones are either FM2 or AM3+. The ram must be a compatible speed with the motherboard, and the motherboard form factor must be able to fir in a case. Form factors are EATX, ATX, mATX, and mITX, from largest to smallest. On youtube, NeweggTV has a very good video on picking parts and building. Worst case scenario, you can just ask us for a list of parts
 
If you can stretch your budget at all you would see enormous returns in performance.
 
I agree with Denther, at that budget, see if you can use some old hard drives or find some used parts, I got lucky because I had recently repaired one of my dad's computers and got a free power supply an graphics card out of it.
 
The common form factors are; (Largest) Extended ATX, ATX, Micro ATX, Mini ITX (Smaller) A Mini ITX case supports a Mini ITX motherboard, however most Cases support multiple Form Factor so check the cases support form factors in there specifications. Heat sinks are harder to find the right size for the most part the one that comes with your Processor should be good enough unless you are overclocking.
