I wouldn't say either is better than the other. My reason of going for the 3870 are its 55nm, GDDR4 (i think its samsung) and currently the GT/GTS are using some ram i havn't heard of before and are having alot of problems (not all cards have the problems, obviously more faulty ram than there should be). The 3870 overclocks better and is shipped with a better cooler. From what i have seen in reviews, the 3870 seems to give a better picture and wants to render more things off into a distance with more detail than the 8800 would. But that could be due to drivers, im no expert. ;)

Thats a biased answer.

Or I just summed up my answer by a quick google search and some bench marks.

You're way overbudget. DVD burner is too expensive. I'm not sure which GTS you're referring to, but none are $500. Some GTX models aren't even that expensive. 700W for one card?

Power requirements for the G92 GTS taken from the eVGA website:

Requirements
Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 26 Amp Amps.)
Minimum 450 Watt for SLI mode system.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 30 Amp Amps.)

These cards are so close in performance its not funny. Its hard to go by benchmarks anymore because most are biased, and some are obviously been stretch way out of proportion. I always gone for price and performance. The 3870 had it.

In 90% of the benchmarks i see, its anywere from 5-0.1 fps behind .. with a better cooler, overclocks better, and cheaper. With a couple clicks, that can be made up very easly. The 3870 produces a better picture, i think i could sacrifice 3 fps for a better image. ;)

Moral is, you can't go wrong with either card.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. That's a good point. Short of buying all the cards and testing them yourself, you almost have no choice but to rely on the benchmarks posted at these websites. I wouldn't be suprised if nvidia had a hand in some of these tests. ;)

On paper, the Radeon 3870 is superior to both the nVidia cards. Click here for a comparison.

That's not a bad way to go. ;)

Yeah, not much of a difference, is there? You forgot to account for nVidia fanboyism. That's worth a ton, isn't it?

Big deal, we can go on ALL DAY if you want. Both are great cards, the 3870 cost a few bucks less. I stated my opinion. The 3870 wins some, the GT wins some. The drivers for both cards haven't matured yet, even in those links, the GT and 3870 are on the same level in some games. ALL those benchmarks were taking on new drivers, which sucked something horrible for both cards.

As to the OP, i would say it depends on what your willing the spend. Yes the 3870 offers (best bang for the buck). 3870: $220-250. 8800GT: $280-310

so is there a reason why the 8800gt is more expensive? and what about a 8800gts?

ATI is offering their HD 3870 lower to be competetive with the 8800GT which is also at a bargain price.

The 8800GTS(512MB version only) is better than both the cards...but i wouldn't go for it due to it's price. The 8800GT isn't too far off of it and is significantly cheaper.

not to mention both cards are overpriced right now due to demand. The 3870 is suppose to be $220, GT is suppose to be around $250.

If you were to get a crossfire motherboard, two 3870s kill two 8800GT's in SLI
