Building Home NAS/Server

I've been toying with the idea of either buying a NAS or building my own. If I bought one, I'd be looking at the Synology DS1513+ or DS412+. If I build it, this is what I was looking at, let me know if you have any suggestions.

Lian Li PC-Q25B Black Aluminum Mini-ITX Case - $105

Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D 380W PSU - $50

G.SKILL Ares 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1600 RAM - $65

ASRock Z87E-ITX LGA1150 Intel Z87 Motherboard - $140

Intel Core i3-4330 Haswell 3.5GHz LGA1150 CPU - $140

Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD - $90

3x Toshiba 3TB 7200RPM SATAIII HD's - $390 ($130x3)

Total: $975

The Synology NAS systems are really nice. The Kennex just recently started using one :good: It's got a really nice interface to work with too.

I've heard great things about them, but I'm still debating which model I would want. The 5-bay is nice, but $780 is a lot of money for an enclosure only, which is why I was contemplating building my own.

What I'm worried about most though is if I build my own, the amount of time and tweaking I'll have to do to get it setup as a NAS for internal and external access, versus the Synology which is basically ready to go.
