Building my last computer

I'm 66 years old and if I live long enough to outlast this next computer I'm going to build then I'll just buy whatever is out there. The last computer I built was a AMD 955. Well that was 3 years ago. I have a case, power supply, and all the hard drives and everything that goes with it for my new computer. I've haven't kept up with computers for the last 3 years which make me need some advice. I'm looking for an i7 which would be my best bang for the buck, a good motherboard, Ram, and maybe a Video card for not more than $200 which will let me play any game out there if I can find one worth playing because I have 400 hours on Rage. I want to keep these 4 items less than a grand.

Okay, how old is your current PSU, and when did you purchase it? For under a thousand dollars I don't reccomend a i7, and its only better then a i5 during pro work like Photoshop and AutoCAD. I would do a Z87 UD3H, a i5 4670K, 2 x 8 GB RAM, and a GTX 770 or GTX 760. I cannot pull up links right now, but just search these at Newegg and pick the cheapest one.

Gigabyte Z87 UD3H
2 x 8 GB DDR3 1866 MHz (get it by Corsair, G.Skill, or Kingston, and don't search this one. Try to find it by browsing the categories)
Intel i5 4670K
eVGA GTX 770
Or
eVGA GTX 760 (lower end but cheaper)

Also, here's to hoping you outlast this computer and many more!

The minimum required specs for Rage call for a 9800 GTX and a Core 2 Quad - so I don't think that you need to spend a load of money on an i7 and an expensive video card.

With that being said, you do still obviously want a good machine, and since you are prepared to spend the money I'd probably recommend the i5 4670K with the motherboard and RAM recommended by PCunicorn and look at the GTX 760 unless you're willing to spend the extra on the 770. You could even get something like an AMD R9 270X and be good.

Alternatively you could get an AM3+ motherboard such as the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 and an AMD CPU such as the FX-6300 or FX-8320. That'd likely be cheaper than the i5 but provide similar performance.

Your current CPU should actually be fine for that game - depending on what video card you have now, it might be far more cost effective to just upgrade your video card. Is Rage performing poorly on your current setup? What are your exact current specs?

Edit: Looking back through some of your old posts (it would appear that you've been wanting to build a new system for about the past year), it looks like you have a 5750. At this point in time, I recommend that you upgrade your graphics card to an R7 260X or an R9 270X and be done with it. That should improve Rage's performance without breaking your bank - either option is going to be miles and miles faster than the 5750 which you have now. You may need to upgrade your power supply too, depending what PSU you currently have. I don't think there's any real need to go and buy a new CPU/board/RAM combo right now.

Obviously, if you buy the new graphics card and you're still dissatisfied, then by all means replace your CPU/board/RAM.

Maybe just buy an R9 270X and an 840 Evo - perhaps a PSU if previous one is too old - and be done with it. An SSD is much faster than a HDD, and if you were prepared to spend the money for i7+mobo+gpu+ram you can certainly afford a $110 SSD.

Yeah I recommend you do this - read the last bit of my post.

The i5 4670K sounds good but what brand of motherboard and RAM. what would be the best speed for my RAM? I'm not doing an AMD because the power it takes to push it is way too much. I have a 120 GB SSD drive still in the package for my OS. I have a 5700 video card but I'm really thinking of something better, but a GTX 770 is out of the question, way more than I need.

Okay, I would do a GTX 760 or 270X. What PSU is it, and when was it purchased? I always reccomenf when you have the chance, upgrade a PSU older then 3 years, and I don't reccomend using a PSU longer then 5. It can be done but normally they star wearing out. The motherboard brand is Gigabyte. Get RAM by Kingston, Corsair, or G.Skill. And by the way, while I would do Intel, AMD really doesn't require much more power. Especially for what it is, a 8350 is a 8 Core CPU and uses 125W, a 4670K uses 85W and is a quad core.

Yeah, that's the flagship AMD processor at the moment. You're kind of worrying about a non-issue here. Honestly, I would look at getting the 8320. It'll do everything you need and will likely be cheaper than the i5.

Of course, the i5 is great, but if you save money by going AMD and you don't lose any performance, then why spend the extra?

1600MHz or 1866MHz RAM is what you want - go for 1866MHz now (just make sure your board supports it though, but most do).
