Building Own Computer For College/Gaming

yea i think i'm just going to upgrade my current system for college

it's a dell dimension 4600

i got 4 gb of available ram space and I'm running 2 x 512's of PC3200 right now and i think i'm going to stack this on there instead of the 512's

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820231047

Only because my sis was messing around in my computer one day when i had my comp open, i had just showed her the ram sticks i put in, and she yanked out the 4th slot, breaking the holders. (i was pretty ticked) So i only have 3 slots

So then i can run the first two on dual channel and the last one not, at 2.5 gigs right? and then i think i'll just pay the extra 20 bucks on the AGP card to get the real version not open box. cuz newegg said they wouldn't send me any of the CD's Drivers, Cables or any essential parts if i needed them, and to actually expect them not to be there lol. I was like why take the risk. So i'm getting the real version as soon as it becomes available :P.

sound good?

2.4ghz pentium 4

you cant go dual channel and have a another 512 card in there.
1) It wont work because they are two different brands of RAM
2) pretty sure it wont detect the 3rd card

My 2gb's are the same brand and everything.

The two 512's are... I think different, one is from dell, the other is a Kingston.

I just figured they'd work dual channel since they are both 3200

p.s. It won't do dual channel with the 512 chip in there? Won't the two gigs just run dual and the 512 not? idk.

edit: *bump*

Yes it will what? (just to make sure :P)

A) Work with 2 gigs running dual and the 512 not running dual

B) Work with 2 gigs running dual and 512's running dual (even though they are different brand 512's but are both 3200's) (and also saying that my 4th port even works, because the snap-in pins are snapped off.)

wait, do u mean will the 2 1GBs run in dual-channel? then the 512 wont?

that is correct...

you prolly have 4 RAM slots on your motherboard, 2 are one color, the other 2 are another color...

put the two sticks of 1GB in 2 of the slots that are the same color, and put the 512 stick in one of the slots that are another color, then the 2 1GB sticks will run dual-channel...

hope i was helpfull :)

Very. Thank you very much.

Also i noticed that one of my 512 chips says like 333mhz, and I thought i saw on another it said 400 mhz. Then i went into my setup and my bios said it was running at 333mhz. Is that because it brought down the speeds of all the other ram, or did i mis-read something (it could be I just saw the ddr400).
