I would go with the cheapest thing I could find that had a good size case. It’s only going to transfer files and run an OS. I just got rid of my 800MHZ and switched to a real file server at my house because I wanted RAID 5 and I don’t see much speed difference.

I have a Dell Poweredge 4300 Server right now that i'm using. It only has an 18gig SCSI drive in it though which is were im running into a problem. I have considered adding a SATA controller card and USB 2.0 card to it instead of building the above systems. I also heard there was a SCSI to SATA converter I could find for the hot swappable drives. Has anybody else ever seen these?

If you don’t need hot swap then I would get a SATA card for it. IMO hot swap for RAID is only for applications that can’t go down.

You might try googling "SCSI to SATA" "hot swap".

what is the higher goal here?

All you need to do is get a cheap computer, toss in a few large HDs, load Linux, run samba, done.
