i just built a computer for a friend. a little backround about the build. i used an antec three hundred case, a WD green 1.5 TB hard drive, a LG dvd writer, 4 GB Gskill DDR3, gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2 AM3+ motherboard, an AMD athlon II X4 processor, and a brother laser printer. i went with a fairly simple motherboard since they dont need a whole lot of additional features and gigabyte is a fairly solid brand, the price was right newegg $50. i got him a 1.5 TB hard drive since he wants to have movies on the drive, thats plenty of space. the athlon II X4 offered plenty of performance for their needs; primary use of this computer will be internet, movies, and office they arent going to be playing games so the phenon wasnt necessary. i also felt that 4 GB of ram would be adequate for a PC not expected to play games. they also plan on doing a fair amount of printing which is why i suggested laser; so long as you dont need color they are much more economical for large volume printing. i have had a brother laser for my own use and it has proven to be a durable printer, allot of these cheaper injet printers eat cartridges and they dont seem to last. i used a corsair 500W power supply, a good quality unit with room for expansion
the computer runs excellent i think i did an excellent job tailoring it to their needs. if someone says they arent looking for a gaming PC i build it to those needs, its a quick computer for basic use. the case has more then enough room to grow and the motherboard has a PCI express slot if they ever wanted a graphics card (card would most likely be a workstation card so he could run solidworks, he likes to design things)
now for the complicated part. he has the computer setup in his living room. i hooked it up to the TV using an HDMI to DVI cable. he wants the same PC to be used in the office and to be used in the finished basement with a movie projector. i understand that long enough VGA cables and audio cables must be purchased, which he has already ordered.
the only problem i have is that the wireless keyboard and mouse signal cannot pass through walls. can he purchase multiple USB wireless logitech receivers and place them in multiple rooms in the house or is this not possible? is there something you can do to extend the range a recieve or boost the signal so it can pass through walls easier? what he wants is the most complicated situation that i have ever ran into? does anyone have an other ideas?
