after debating whether to buy a dell xps, i have been convinced not to, and to build my own comp. but i havent a clue where to start, ive tried searching through posts but cant find anything that will help me on my way, where do i start, any help would be appreciated, thanks

to be honest i read that already, but it still dosent explain to me for example what kind of case i need to start off. i dont know the first thing about building a pc and dont know whether i would be purchasing the right case or not. how do i know what kind of case to buy, are they all the same inside? will they all do the same thing? can i put the same amount of *stuff* into them, i just dont know. this is my problem.

Depending on what you want, you can choose from a variety of form factor cases. ATX is the most used for home computers. You should look at getting a fairly large case and "plan" how you're gonna wire everything up in order to have an optimal airflow in the case.

Just as an example, a case like the Antec P180 has the PSU mounted on the bottom in it's own "compartment" where you can also put 4 HDD's. It also fits 2 HDD's in the top compartment where all the other parts would be installed. It comes with 3 120mm fans, one in the rear, one in the top and one in the lower compartment.
