Warning: Kinda long, but interesting nonetheless, maybe...
Hello.
Brief history needed for question:
I am not a hardcore gamer, or at least not anymore kinda. You see, I never played games more than casually until I received WoW. Once I received WoW, my first MMO, I was addicted (wow, what a surprise).
Anywho, I played WoW from Christmas 04' until about 2 months ago, something around a year and a half. It was then that my addiction to the game began to upset other parts of my life. In addition, I began to realize a sad truth about MMOs, or rather a sad truth for those who love TANGIBILITY!
Onto the question (based on tangibility):
Ok, so heres the thing. While I am not planning to EVER go back to the way I was, I am not up for cancelling my account, just because I spent too much lame time earning my goods. Its one thing to waste your life earning crap on a game, but its another thing to just throw it all away.
Heres the scenario: You know how when you have played a game such as Super Mario or Zelda or Final Fantasy or an even better example, Diablo, or Starcraft? Well, the thing is that when you earn your way through the game or earn a medal or earn a weapon, or whatever, it is saved to either the catridge, the memory card, or the hard drive. Basically, if you wanted, you could retrieve your file in 5, 10, 20 , 50 years, or ANYTIME and review your stats, awards, accomplishments, and you have something TANGIBLE FOREVER that you can review, and basically own.... Well, after playing WoW, I started to realize that WoW does NOT offer this type of tangibility. In fact, whether its 5, 10, 20 years down the line, whenever WoW is capeesh, so is everything I earned. I wont be able to retrieve my crap in 50 years and go, "hey, those were good times."
While many may say, "who cares?" or "tangible is to WoW, as money is from selling your account on Ebay", it is the tangibility of retrieving a saved character thats important to me. Am I right when I assume my saved character will be capeesh the day WoW dies, or has there ever been an exampled of an MMO offering a "saving service" or something in the past?
Overall: Knowing I wasted my life earning pointless things in WoW sucks.... but if those things are one day erased, Im gonna feel worse... either way, thanks for any answers, sorry this was long ^^.
Rock on Zelda!
