Burn a DVD, What file type for good quality?

A freind loaded a movie on my portable hard drive in MKV file format. So I had to find and download software to convert MKV to something I could burn, which I did. Now I ended up going with OJOsoft video converter and it has so many formats to choose from. It has AVI, MP4, MPEG, VOB, MOV, WMV, FLV, TS, ASF, MKV, 3PG and SWF. My question is whats the best one to use to get the best video quality?
Using Nero to burn after converting, I converted the first one in AVI format and the quality is horrible, I can see the pixel squares on the screen. So I did another one to VOB file format. Much better but can anyone give me any pointers on this. I don't need to do such tasks very often but when I do it's all trial and error which means sometimes burning coasters. Besides that now I can't help but wonder if I'm setling for "ok" when there may be better quality at my fingertips. Most often I'll just rip and burn a backup of a video that I buy at the store so the kids can't wear out or damage the original, little angels that they are.
Anyway, if anyone is all knowing in the world of codecs and file types and stuf, I'd realy appreciate your time.

Good evening fuzebox40

I would convert your mkv to .vob files for quality purposes - it's custom designed to get the best out of DVD. If you're looking for a program to do this I would recommend DVD Flick.

I used to use Nero and was never entirely comfortable with it, but didn't have the confidence to break away from it. When I got my new PC I went originally with Free Easy Burner - but that seemed a bit hit and miss using Windows 7. I now use ImgBurn and think it's fantastic. I now convert DVD directories to ISO files and burn that - it sounds cumbersome but ImgBurn is well speedy, friendly and a breeze to use if you work through the tutorial first.
