Burning Movie on a DVD

I have been trying to burn a family movie I have on my computer to a DVD, I burned it as data. I can play the burned DVD on the computer, but it doesn't work on my dvd player. Can anyone help me, what should I do to be able to play it on my dvd player.

You cannot just burn an avi to a disk and expect your dvd player to play it. You have to convert it to dvd format. You could use nero or convertxtodvd! Do not talk about copying copyrighted dvd's on this forum though!! They are your personal home made movies, ok?
