Burning video files to DVD

I am having trouble burning an avi video file to a DVD-RW using Nero. Nero does not seem to register the files as being there when i try to burn them. Is there a certain format I need to convert them to using some program or am i just an idiot and missing something obvious?

DVD's are in MPEG2 format. You might have to convert them to this before you can burn them to a DVD. I know this is the case for most dvd burning programs.
