Burnt Out CPU

Trauma

Kinda of a rookie question, but i just installed a new CPU into my brothers old board. It starts up fine, but while in POST, gives me an error and tells me to go into BIOS and to reset the CPU settings. So I go into the BIOS look at stuff, then the computer just shuts down. I have to turn the power supply off and then back on in order for it to boot up again. I keep getting the same error, i tryed going through the BIOS quickly and then saving and exiting, but when i exit BIOS the computer shuts down and i have to reset the power supply. I also installed a graphics card, idk if any of these could contribute to the problem but i would like to figure out what is wrong without paying a professional to do it for me. Thank you.

Could there be compatability problems with the motherboard/processor? Try the old processor, and give us some info on the setup, perhaps a mobo model.

That happened to me becuase I was a newb and didnt put stand-offs when I attached my m/b to my m/b tray!!! Wasnt good.... the same thing you said happened, I put on stand-offs, and it worked fine..... thank God it didnt ruin my M/B!! :) lucky me!

See if that works

haha same thing with me, but i was unlucky and my mobo fried.

Well, i checked out that mobo and itr seems that it WILL support up to and including the Athlon XP 3200+. To be on the safe side i would pop the old CPU back in, perform a BIOS upgrade and then put the 3200 back in and see how that goes.

I put the old one back in, along with the old GPU and same error and everything. I cant load up the hardrive. I dont know if i fried the mobo or not. Hmmm, very interesting problem.
