Business Server & Network

I currently work for a small architectural firm and have been asked to look for a new server for the office. We have approximately 13 people in the office, we use the current server to store our Project files. All programs thatt we use are installed on individual workstations. We are currently looking at upgrading because we are running out of Hard drive space.

The question is, where should I look and is there any recommendation to a good, reliable server with about 500mb of had drive space.

I know this might be to vague a question but any recommendations are apperciated!

Actually what you are looking for can be inexpensive and easy to setup. You dont need a "SERVER" as most people would use it. You need a computer that has a lot of Hd space, and is always on. This computer would have it HD's shared so everyone would have a mapped drive to it. Servers can cost thousands of dollars, a computer will do what you are asking ~$500-$750. If you need it to do other things, let us know.
And I think you mean it needs 500Gb not MB of space.

I would recommend 2-4 500gb Hd's raided together. This means you would have 2 Hd's that can hold 1tb (~1000gb) of data, and the other 2 would be for mirroring the main drives. If you loose a HD, the other back it up. A Single 500gb Drive is about $120. I would look at getting mofr space than is required, as files in todays work environment seem to be getting bigger as the space becomes available.

Send me a PM if you need more help.

Yes, you don't need a fancy server. I think you just need a storage server, and storage server is just a name, it can be put in any computer chassis. :)
If you want, give me a message, and I am confident that I can solve your problem.:)

File servers are easy to set up, and very cheap. You could even run Linux if you know it or know somebody at your office who is handy with it.

I would scrap the whole RAID idea that was previously posted, not needed for 13 users. I would however recommend a second back up for redundancy. Like an external drive, or tape back up device, that way your back ups are backed up.

I would build a box with two hard drives in it. One for the OS, and the rest are for storage. That way if the OS drive crashes your data is fine and dandy.

I set up a desktop server for two computer labs for a render farm. I have 100 clients connecting to it, and it runs fine and dandy with no RAID set up, and I used Linux.

Also, just so you know SMB has a 15 connection limit on XP Professional. So, if you ever need more than 15 connections you will need to buy a server OS, or go with Linux.

Thanks everybody,

I think I have a handle on what I need. I will look into a tower with a dual hard drive. I appreciate the help.
