Busy hard drive

I am experiencing the following problem. Every half or so my hard drive gets so busy that my machine freezes.

So far, turned off indexing, ran check disk, defragmented the hard drive, run various anti malware scans and anti virus scans. Checked processes but there doesn`t seem to be anything particuarly adnormal there. Any ideas please?

Well if its doing it over and over I would firstly back your data OFF the drive.

I had a old 80GB start that crap and it ended up dying. Not 100% sure if that is your case but it sounds exactly like it.

A HDD should never get so busy that it freezes the system...it should make it sluggish if your 100% capping the system but never freeze it and force reboot.

Sorry, I shouldn`t said that it gets frozen. It just slows the system down so much. It`s a new hard drive also.

Either something funky is happening to the drive or there is a process that is using it like that. Try stopping all unnecessary programs from running at bootup, just leave antivirus and whatever you actually need running. Reboot and see how it reacts then.
