Most of the time the plug in of a pair of phones will switch out the speakers by redirecting the audio signal. If you were to use a "Y" type adapter to plug the plug the phones into that rather then the one that shorts the speakers you may need a signal boost to bring the audio level up. Some speakers setups require you to switch the speakers off to use a head phone set. It really depends on where you plug those in and the speakers as well.
