Overdone I know but Please Help

Hi,
I need some help picking out a laptop for school, I have about $1,000-1,500 to spend on it. It's going to be used mostly just for school and web browsing, maybe some music but not a ton. I was thinking about getting a Dell but a friend of mine had hers for 2 months before it overheated and fried it's own motherboard. Which companies are best? I'll be a commuting student so durability plays a part in what I need. Also is buying a laptop online a good idea or should it be bought in-store, as far as warrenties would it be easier or safer from in-store? Also which add ons are worth getting, like with Dell computers you can customize it to add RAM or media things?

Thanks for any help :)

You might want to take a glance at Apple's new Macbooks. Now that Macs are using Intel Processors you have the option of installing Windows.

Everyone says that at first but it is actually much easier than a Windows machine. You'll have alot less problems with a Mac too. They also last for a long time and hold their value.

i would recomend a mac to someone who either doesnt know how to use a computer, or doesnt mind not having options for anything...

That's nice but I'm pretty sure a Mac could handle this,

Well since I've been using a computer since I was 10 I'm going to say I know how to use one and I like options I change my mind about a billion times so I don't think I'll go for a Mac, Thanks for letting me know.

Well, for doing just
web browsing, maybe some music but not a ton.
You can probably get one in the 500-700 range and have that extra money left over for your car, gas, books, etc..

I'd say for what you want..
I'd say get a Pentium M, maybe like 1.5ghz or more.
Have atleast 512mb of RAM.
Music... Since you are not using a ton.. maybe like a 60gb-100gb since you will be using it for college and school stuff also.

Other than that.. everything else is pretty much up to you. The screen size, the brand, the lightness/heavyness, the color, removable drives, wifi, etc..

Look at sites like:
www.newegg.com
www.tigerdirect.com
www.outpost.com
www.buy.com

They mostly have sales constantly.. so check around..

Brands..
Maybe like Acer, Asus, Averatec.. these are sorta in the middle to low end, cheaper laptops.
Toshiba, Sony, Lenovo, ... maybe Fujitsu and Sharp or sorta in the middle to high end.

I myself are not fond of like.. Dell and Gateway.. but they are pretty cheap in computers.. so if you want to, you are welcome to check them out too.

for the longest lasting I personally would go with a toshiba they are not the cheapest but they last quite long. I would not go with a dell because they now install spyware on your computer before you even get it. I would say get it from a store they normally can help you out will all your needs and also you can get a warranty sometimes cheaper then online. defenately do not go with a mac

If I was you I would get a lenovo C100 notebook. I think it is perfect for what you are looking for. If you want more info you should look at this site: http://caipsgws001.can.ibm.com/store/page?cpage=sale_notebooks&status=0&tool=0&cells=0&title=0&bannerkey=0&aud=LENOVO"]http://caipsgws001.can.ibm.com/store/page?cpage=sale_notebooks&status=0&tool=0&cells=0&title=0&bannerkey=0&aud=LENOVO or if for some reason the site doesn't work, just go to lenovo's site and you will see it there.

There's nothing about not having options on a Mac, don't let yourself be fooled. Mac OS X has plenty of options, and if you really know what you're doing, you can go into the terminal, under the hood of it's FreeBSD Mach_Kernel base and really have options. You can even compile your own custom version of the Darwin Kernel. Plenty of options, it's pretty stable and may be a good thing for schoolwork, plus, you can always install Windows along with it as well.
