i'm looking at buying a laptop. all i want to be able to do is get on-line, i dont need all the other bells and whistles.
what should i be looking for?
brand

Wireless internet

i wont be traveling with it. i may hook a printer up sometimes.

thanks

If you want a new one, then something like this will be more than plenty:

Brand doesnt matter
1.4Ghz Celeron M
256MB DDR2
40GB Hard Drive
WiFi

Dell and HP always have deals so you can get similar laptops cor around $450-$550.

thanks. if i wanted to $pend a little more where should it go? 1,8Ghz? 512MB? 80 GB?

If you wanted to spend some more money, i would invest in 512MB of RAM, and a 60 or 80GB hard drive. But if you more money to spend, i would invest in a 1.5Ghz or 1.6Ghz Celeron M.

how's this look?

Operating System Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
Processor AMD Sempron(TM) 3000+ (1.8GHz/128KB L2 Cache)
Display 15.0" TFT XGA BrightView (1024x768)
Graphics Card ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M
Memory 512MB DDR SDRAM (1x512MB)
Hard Drive 60 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
Primary CD/DVD Drive 8X DVD Drive
Networking Integrated 56K Modem + 10/100 Ethernet LAN
Primary Battery 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

also, dont i need wireless networking for my printer and other cpu? whats a good router? my cpu's will be about 50' apart.

yeh that might even be too good but it is a reasonably good laptop. personally i would look for something with a pentium m processor, they just run so much better than the celeron m

yeh the pentium m is a lot better than a celeron m. DONT get a p4 in a laptop though....uses waay too much power...thats why the P m is better...

Its true that a Pentium M uses less power, but if your not really concerned about power usage then the Celeron M is fine.

I don't know what the "pro's" will recommend, but I have a Linksys Wireless-G broadband router. My other half says it slows down his net surfing just a bit but not significantly enough to be a bother. He can go throughout the house with it - roughly 50 feet from front to back and up and down stairs.

if you buy used
1. make sure there is not a bios password
2. check the condition of the main battery
3. check the power plug in the back, make sure it is not halfway broken. Take a pencil and see if you can wiggle the center lug around
4. make sure the screen is not cracked
5. check the HD for capacity and no bad sectors.
6. check the cd rom / dvd for functions
7. get the recovery cd (s) if any
8. look all the case over to see if there any cracks.
9. check ALL the ports, especially the modem ( RJ-11)
10 and the RJ-45 port
11. look at the keyboard
