Buying a Mining Card Safe?

I've been kicking the idea of getting a new video card around in my head. I've been looking on Ebay and can get a 7970 in the neighborhood of 160 bucks pretty easily. Now it's either stated or pretty obvious that these cards were used for mining. Is it safe to get them?
 
Obviously the card is safe - are you asking about whether leaving your computer on for long periods of time is safe? Unless it gets really hot (monitor temperatures) or you're worried about damage being caused by things like power cuts, then yes usually it is safe to leave it for long periods of time whilst mining.

That's not what he means at all Jason. He means the card he is looking at buying was used for mining by the original owner, and he wants to know if he should still buy it because it was used for mining.

Oh, sorry...

I would still say it's safe. Yes, the chances are it's been used a lot and left on for long periods of time, but that's a risk you take when buying any used component - you just can't tell for sure. These cards are designed to be heavily used anyway, so as long as it works and the seller isn't reporting any problems then it should be safe.

So I'd say don't worry and go for it.
 
Yeah that was what I meant. I'm trying to talk myself out of it because I don't really need an upgrade yet. Should I expect prices on these to go up or down? Seems like 170 for a 7970/R9 280X is pretty good.

Or should I just wait until I need the upgrade?

Edit: I have no self control, just bought it.
