Buying a new 19" monitor

I am looking at some 19" LCD monitors for a relative. She does not need anything special. She is using a 17" CRT and if she uses it for a long period, it starts bothering her eyes. The only thing she does is play card games and Microsoft Word stuff. The budget is around $150 or less counting shipping.

I don't know if I should get a widescreen or not. It seems that most standard screens are a little more expensive than widescreen. If you were an average user and did not watch any movies or anything like that, what would you want?

I noticed this has a resolution of 1680x1050 instead of the normal 1400x900 for widescreen. Is that better?

Which one out of those two? Any better suggestions? What are some good brands?

I am going to get one that has built in speakers. I know they are not good quality but she isn't too worried about that.

If she isn't gaming and watching movies then the ASUS is a good monitor.


For gaming WS isn't so bad but it really sucks when it comes to DVDs etc imo....I hate black bars.

I thought that was the whole point of widescreen monitors, to get rid of the black bars. If you are watching a widescreen movie, the black bars shouldn't be there should they?

You would think not but I just got Zombieland and I get 2 inch black bars top and bottom on my current monitor and 10 inch on my 32'' LCD.
Maybe there isn't this issue @ 1980x1020 or the aspect ratio of the DVD. Either case I never had the issue with my CRT TV or Monitors :/

The only thing that saves me is the fact video players can "stretch" videos on monitors....but this doesn't help on my TV or my 50 inch projection TV.

I have also thought about buying myself a new monitor and giving her the one I am using now which is a 19" Hanns G JW199D.

I have been looking at some 23" monitors and some are priced not too bad.

The second one has full HD 1080p support. Would that be worth getting?
Of course the bigger the size the better but my max budget is $200.
