Buying a new CPU

Hey guys, I am planning on upgrading my computer and the CPU I was thinking of is an Intel Socket 775 Pentium 4 3GHz. Its gonna be used by a 16yr old nerd:D.

Any Ideas/Comments?

You could go that route, but have you at least looked at Athon64 systems?

I have an i915 based system and it's decent enough but if you are looking at LGA775 boards now you'll want an i945 at the very least so that the upgrade path to dual core is open without upgrading the motherboard.

At the moment I have a 1.7Ghz Athlon XP... any ideas on what I could get to fit the same mothoerboard (and save me some dough). I want ~3Ghz.

Ok, if I was gonna go with AMD (new MoBO and all) what would you recommend for a budget? On Ebay my proposed Intel stuff cost about $500AUD, including RAM.

Yes, but it would be very expensive in the end. Your better off with a dual core processor.

that would be cool...but yea, really expensive. if you ask me, which im not sure why anybody would, you should just buy refurbished from newegg.

...or something similar.

i got my cpu for 184 usd. the cpu ALONE is 270 new. with everything else and in a box im not sure how much. but i definitely saved a pretty penny.

lol definitely go with AMD single core, if i were you. get a 2ghz, 3200+. it will run around as fast as a pentium 4 3200mhz, thats why they give it the model: 3200+. its more than what you need, and im sure whatever video card you buy it wont bottleneck it at all. its a good deal... probably $160 for the proc? and overclockable too!

I got a quote today for a 3000+ with a MoBo and 1gig of RAM, $625 AUD.

If that price is for just the three components, then that's VERY expensive, unless the RAM and mobo are VERY high quality.

Socket 939 Board - $165
Athlon 3000+ 64 Bit - $280
2x 512MB DDR RAM - $180
Total - $625

Not sure whereabouts in Australia you are (i'm in Vic), but try www.staticice.com.au - they list the best prices for components from a number of Australian retailers. The best price for the 939 pin Athlon 64 3000+, for example, is $199. Still not sure what the RAM and mobo are, (brand, model number, etc...), but you can probably find better prices. Personally, I use this site to find the best price, then ask the local retailer to match it.

An AMD 3200+ has similar gaming performance as an Intel 3.2Ghz, but its not as fast as one. If you compared the 2 chips AMD would only win at gaming.

And thats not why they have those numbers, there just model numbers that AMD put on their CPU, like intel and there 540J model number. People just use the model number to compare when thats not why AMD put them there.

I want it to to Lucas-Lehmer Primability tests on numbers around 10,000,000 digits long...

Yah, Prime95 will be running in the background, but I will also use it for gaming (that reminds me, I need a new Video Card:P) and music playing...

Pretty much Firefox, RealPlayer and Prime95 will be running together most of the time.

BTW, the board is a Gigabyte K8NSC-939
