Buying a new Desktop

Hi
I am considering upgrading my desktop. Problem is, I wish my new desktop to use Windows XP operating system. This greatly restricts possible sources.

The spec I have in mind is -
Quad core processor
4Gb Ram
1Tb hard drive
Windows XP operating system
Price range £500 - £700

PC World, Dell etc only seem to supply desktops with Vista and Windows 7, so I was looking at alternatives such as pc specialists but reading some of the forum comments is making me uncertain about which companies are dependable.

Can anybody offer me some advice on how to proceed, and any recommendations on a reliable supplier.

Yes, looks like sticking with XP is a backward step, simply to avoid the hassle of new drivers for the peripherals and the programms that I'm using - photoshop, Family Tree maker, Memory Map, etc

Everyone is telling me to go for Windows 7

What will you be using your system for and would you be able to build your system if you knew how?

Drivers and software compatibility was an issue when Vista first came out, however, now it has been out for a few years, and now 7 is virtually the same OS but reskinned a little, there aren't any problems at all with 99% of programs, they will all function and look the same as they did under XP

It would be a better move to build your own computer and install an operating system on, which sounds like a daunting task, but it is as easy as putting the disc in and following the on-screen instructions

What part of the UK are you in? I ask because you can negate shipping charges by using stores near to you and picking up the parts or computer yourself.
 
I just got this computer a year ago, but I'm staying with XP as long as I can and I suggest that's what you get and wait and see what happens.
 
Windows 7 is more secure and stable than XP will ever hope to be, and it's about as fast. Unless you have a program that you KNOW has issues with win7, there's no reason whatsoever to stick with it. It loses all support in a few years anyway.

If you're THAT worried about problems, you could grab Win7 pro. It comes with something called XP mode, where it literally runs the program inside a virtualized copy of Windows XP, like this:

I just wanted to thank everyone who took the trouble to reply to my message.

Looks like I will probably go for a pc with Windows 7. My main use of a pc is related to genealogy, as I do family tree research for clients using "Family Tree Maker" and I store all the information on my hard drive. This involves a lot of internet browsing. I also do restoration of old and damaged photographs using "Adobe Photshop". I now know that I can get versions of both these programmes that are compatible with windows 7.
