buying computer parts - help

Hello, i have never build a pc all from scratch, but i have bought some parts.


My pc broke and i really need to get a new one. My budget is around 600~ if its possible, and i really dont know what to do. I don't do gaming that much but every once in a while i do play. I have the Hard Drive, DVD Player, keyboard, mouse, monitor. I would like to do dual monitor, in which im buying another monitor. This is what i thought of:

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 541 Prescott 3.2GHz
MotherBoard: LGA 775 Intel 945P ATX Intel Motherboard
PowerSupply: LOGISYS Computer PS550ABK ATX12V 550Watts
Memory: GeIL 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)
video -- help?: eVGA 256-P2-N554-AX Geforce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 or MSI RX1600PRO-TD256E 256MB GDDR2

What should i do? is this ok? i want it to be dual monitor and if im right, both work. One of my monitors is VGA (can buy the dvi to DVI) and the other is DVI.

Is this ok ? :D please feel free to suggest anything :(
 
If you're not going to get a Core 2, I'd go with an AMD system. They are much better than Pentium D's. Who knows, maybe AMD will come out with a C2D killer soon and you'll be ready for it? :P

As for the video card, the 7600GT is better than the 1600
 
If you're on a budget for the CPU and dont want to get a C2D then Id get a amd 64 processor. I got my 3700 for like 74 bucks on newegg.
 
haha thanks for all your help. im not buying it yet, i just got a little bit laid down latetly and didnt get updated as all the new stuff came out :D

I used to use a AMD Athlon XP at 1.2 ghz and my motherboard died a week ago. So i need a new pc, but my budget might be about ~~ 700$ idk yet! Still loking for nice deals though.

AFAIK you cannot transfer XP between PC's as it checks the hardware, 4 changes every quarter I think is allowed, and if your computer is an Athlon 1.2, it may indicate an AT standard case, although I cannot be sure.
 
Definately look arounnd for best prices on these. NewEgg and TigerDirect are both great places, I tend to favor newegg though :P Just bought my 320GB HDD for $95! And it's not a piece :P
 
The rig I made was one knocked up in 5 minutes before school so there is likely to be better, although NewEgg is playing up atm so I won't bother tonight...
 
the motherboard i had was ATX, and the windows, i'll install it on a hard drive i have or maybe on another partition so i can backup and maybe install it again after formatting the HD
 
XP won't register itself because it'll actually know if it's changed PC or not by looking at the signatures for each piece of hardware, so unfortunately the current XP is invalid, you can always put the drive in as a slave and get a master, this is what is happening with my celeron machine as XP doesn't boot but you can keep all your old files with a bit of hacking.:)

I'd just get a new case if I were you, and use the old case as a back-up, mainly because you can upgrade later and PCI-E cards really are huge. I added maroon1's card as it was more powerful but cheaper.
