Hi
A lady I know wants to buy a new computer,,/cheapish in the 400 range i guess..She doesn't want Vista and from the little experience i've had with Vista on a friends computer I don't blame her..the problem is finding anything that comes with xp....Compaq and Hp says all they supply is vista..any help appreciated:eek:

Ya you will not find a manufacturer out there right now still offering xp its pretty much been killed by them. I would build one and buy xp from a supplier thats probably the best bet for you.

buying a Compaq, HP, eMachine, Dell, Gateway or anything other bad company will cause you wayyyy more problems than Vista will. i'm not really familiar with any good pre-build machines because i build my own like most of the people here. so the only real advise i can give you is to avoid all "known" brands... they're all bad with cheap parts and bloated with software that will do nothing but slow your machine to half it's potential.

if she insists on buying a known brand...
download:
CCleaner and Autoruns

-uninstall everything that you're not using
-run Autoruns "hide windows services" and than disable everything except Antivirus services.
-use CCleaner to clean your registry.
-if your computer came with Norton AV, remove it immediately and download something else. AVG is nice and it's free.

good luck.

HP gave me an Asus mobo... bad?

Software wise, yes they're hideous but you can uninstall those.

don't get me wrong, i'm not saying every part is bad. if HP decides to use a WD or Seagate HD, kudos. but i'd put money on the fact that they chose it because it was the best deal they could get on a large order, not because they want to give you the best stuff.

it doesn't sound like the buyer is very familiar with hardware, which would make picking a good brand named PC from a major manufacturer kind of difficult.

Um, HP did give me a WD HDD and a LG DVD-RW Lightscribe. :D

but their case sucks. :(

She isn't all that tech savvy..I'm building my next one..However I have Norton 2009 and its way faster than avg 8..Read reviews Norton finally got it right..during silent mode around 0 to 3% cpu resources..Even during scanning the resource use on mine never exceeds 13%

Well, around here a lot of us think of Norton as a virus itself.

Sorry..but your wrong there ..so are the others... http://www.trustedreviews.com/softw...rton-2009-Line-Launched---Speed-Is-The-Key/p1

This shows how much faster it is..You've obviously never tried 2009...I guarentee its the faster than anything i've tried....and this from anti virus reviews:

"Norton Antivirus 2009 is a dramatic improvement over previous versions. Norton's old versions were known to be computer resource hogs in the Tech community. However, Norton has addressed these concerns with their 2009 version - it's now the fastest scanning, and uses the least system memory of any of its major competitors (including Kaspersky, NOD32, McAfee, Trend, BitDefender and others).

Norton Antivirus 2009 is ideal for computer novices and intermediates - for more advanced users, or users with sensitive information on their computers, we would recommend Norton Internet Security 2009 instead since it includes Firewall, AntiSpam, and many other features not included in Norton Antivirus. Norton Internet Security is also able to be used on 3 computers, unlike Norton Antivirus which is only good for one installation."

I think the business computers still come with a option of downgrading back to XP.

The Dell Vostro's have the XP Pro downgrade option. If you keep your eyes open you can sometimes find a free downgrade deal (like my boss did on the Vostro 200 desktops we got). You can get some good deals in the upper $400 range.

That may be, but I'm certainly not going to give it another chance... of course I have no reason to use any antivirus, but when I did run Windows, my rig (not the one I built) came with a Norton trial and it was horrid.

If your going to buy one you can always ask the supplyer to do a downgrade normally costs around £50 if you live in the UK PC World do it for you..
