Buying Laptop - Total Novice

My daughter needs to buy a new laptop - mostly because her fiance is going to Iraq in January and this will be their main source of contact. Her wish list is below. She will also be using it to finish college so would like to have word, excel, powerpoint. By the time she pays taxes and warranty which will probably total around 300.00, she can really only afford around $800 for the actual computer. I see that there are a lot of computers out there right now with rebates from the manufacturer as well as the stores so when replying, maybe we should be looking at the actual computer costing at tops $1100. Thanks in advance for your help. She realizes she may have to sacrifice some of her "wants", but then again, maybe you guys can help make them come true:

1) Wireless. She also wants to buy a webcam so they can see each other very clearly - without the "hesitation" we've seen on some (any suggestions?)
2) Wants fast - her tolerance level for long pauses is short. I believe they will be able to use AOL instant messenging.
3) Wants to be able to copy DVD movies to DVD as well as music on cd
4) Storage - Don't know how critical that will be unless a lot is needed for #3
5) She will use it to watch movies so long battery life.

Her dream computer is the Sony Naio FS742 which Circuit City has a great price on right now, but out of her league after buying a warranty at $200

In otherwords, keep doing the research myself huh :) he-he. This was helpful, but when you are unfamiliar with all of the "terminology" it's difficult to analyze what would be best. They are scraping together as much as they can to get the "most for their money". They want to do everything they can to prevent the possibility of not being able to communicate, receive pictures of each other, etc. In addition, my daughter is looking forward to having something to keep her occupied in terms of transferring movies via DVD burner, watching movies, etc. Actually, another question - if you rent a movie from say Block Buster, can you copy them to DVD on any computers? From what little I can interpret, I think they should be able to accomplish their needs with a Compaq Presario V2000.

How's an Asus W5Ae? It's a very portable system- a 12.1" screen with integrated, swivel camera. Comes with a standard 2 year Global warranty, he can get it serviced anywhere. Also from a company that has probably the most sturdy laptops out on the market (right after the Panasonic Toughbooks- but those are way out of price range). Made with carbon fiber chasis. As for a $1100 budget, I dont think you'll find anything with a built in camera or as sturdy. I think you'll have to up the cost a bit.

Oh, I thought this was the guy going to Iraq, ok. well for 1100, you can pretty much get anything. The Compaq v2000 is a great series, I think one of the best budget, all-round laptops out there, very portable too. You can get an external camera for cheap ($30-60) and she'd be set. :D

As for pirating movies, I dont know about that, and you shouldn't endorse it. ;) But you'll need more than just the included DVD program to copy a copy-protected movie.
