Buying new CPU+MOBO+RAM I5 or I7 ... I currently upgrading from C2d

Hi everyone

I am thinking about spending about 500 dollars on buying an I5.(including MOBO and RAM) People are talking about the I5 not having HT... im guessing that means hyper threading but that can not be correct right?

I am also wondering how ddr3 dual channel vs tripple channel, does having tripple channel really make a huge difference?

Im completely new to the new processors on the market, Last system I really built was 2.5 years ago..

I want to keep my PSU, GPU,DVD and HD

You are right, the i5 does not have Hyper Threading but the i7 does.

Dual vs triple channel DDR3 doesn't make a whole lot of difference in actual performance.
 
wait wait wait, so a pentium 4, D have hyper threading, including I7 but C2D and Quad Core do not?

Maybe im confused about hyperthreading, i thought it meant the processor can work more effienctly with more tasks, but would a quadcore do that too? or a dual core? so there really is a major difference im guessing
 
The Pentium 4, Atom and i7s have hyper threading. Hyper threading duplicates parts of the processor core so that it can maintain the state of the processing pipeline for 2 threads. It can improve performance on multithreaded applications but you already have 4 cores on an i5 and not very much (anything?) will use 8 threads yet.
 
i have read about the i5 and they say it's ok but personally i wouldn't get it, i would get the i7 because if you get the right series number you can tune up there speed to go to the max. the maxium ive heard of is 4GHz but i dont know if you can go that high. if you get a good motherboard and a good i7 your computer will have a lot of grunt in it with just those two things. It doesn't really make a difference it's like new technology. but its also how much you want to spend over the $500 limit. if you want to buy the i5 try it but ive got an i7 and i have grunted it up to 3.8GHz with a 1GB graphics card. No problems doesn't lag anything. the i5 still has turbo boost technology and quad-core processing. it also has a HD Boost. it can go from 2.66 GHz and up to 3.20 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology.

man, My computer knowledge is declining... Turbo boost is basically just overclocking im guessing? Through windows? or just something at the bios screen.

Im not much of an over clocker, I think my mobo isnt really made for it, my PC just shots off as soon as I touch a frequency in the bios. I think I might just got i5, maybe grab 4 gigs of ram.

anyone know a good magizine I could subscribe to so I can keep up to date on this stuff?


ps... what is pipelines... just how many different ways a cpu can send info? wiki is a too detailed

Intel Turbomode is where the CPU will send one or more cores into a near 0 power state and automatically clock up the remaining core(s). You don't have to do anything for it, once it detects that a core is idle it basically turns it off until it has work.

The pipeline is just the name for all the processing stages data goes through. You don't really need to know a lot about it for hyper threading, just that to do HT they store the state of each stage so that you can alternate in a second thread. Different CPUs have a different number of stages. You can ignore everything and just think a hyper threaded CPU core pretends to be 2 cores.
