Buying new Graphic Card..

I'm thinking of buying "ASUS GEFORCE 8600GT 512MB SILENT 2XDVI HDTV PCI-E" anyone got any opinions on that specific card?

Also, i would like to know the difference between buying:
ASUS GEFORCE 8600GT 512MB SILENT 2XDVI HDTV PCI-E and
ASUS GEFORCE 8600GT 256MB SILENT 2XDVI HDTV PCI-E

The difference is 256MB memory but i don't know if bigger memory will get better graphics.. any help will be thankfull!

Instead of getting a worthless 8600 card, (they are complete crap) get either a ATI 3850, ATI 3870 or a 8800GT card.

Who are you kidding? Cheapest 3850 is exactly twice the price of teh cheapest 8600GT ($150 vs $75)

In that price range for ATI you're looking at an HD 2600PRO (not as good) or an HD 2600XT (slightly better than the 8600GT)

I'd probably go for the 2600XT or the 2900 if you can stretch it a little.

The 8600 series are under-performers, you don't have to be partial to point that out. The 38xx series, 3850 in particular, while being slightly more expensive, succeed in ousting the 86's with style. Just take a look at the Benchmarks. Nailing the couple extra bucks to step up to a 38xx is not only wise, it'll make you sexier as well.

Now if OP absolutely cannot spare the change, he has no other choice but to go with stale bread. It's always nice to check beforehand though.
 
That is the stupidest thing ever, lol. What happens when Shader models and DX versions change? Besides, it's just 8 Quadro FX cards in SLI. CAD, in other words (though I'm sure it will still kick Crysis' ass)

Seriously though, they have a bunch of FPS charts here: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/1060/6/page_6_benchmarks_half_life_2_lost_coast/index.html it's mostly older games but it seems the memory just boosts the fps a small amount.

My friend bought http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814241066 and he runs COD4 high with 1024x768 gets 60fps and crysis on medium/high. Fairly inexpensive so if you don't want to spend much you should get this one.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the GEFORCE 8600GT is much slower for almost the same price, which is why I recommended the HD 3850 insted.

Maybe he wants one that can be passively cooled? Did you all even realize both of the cards he was wondering about were silent before you tried to sell him things he didn't ask about?

The 8600 had to be a 'flop'. The lowest I would stoop down to is an 8600GTS, I wouldn't even like that. But, the 3850 does knock it down.

And I answered in a general way, it was up to him to figure out which card he wanted. I just wanted him to know that the 8600's suck. But just to make fortyways happy.

Must be different in the Us. here in Oz the 3850 is 70-100% more to buy than an 8600. Which is around the same bang for buck.

The 8600 is not crap, of course. It a value card that does quite well for the price. It has almost 50% the performance of an 8800.

And even an budget 8500gt (50% of a 8600gt) will run many current releases quite well - ie source games.

the 8500/8600 remain reasonable budget cards. They run very cool and tend to OC very well. Nice passive cards, etc.

Calling them 'crap' does tend to come across as a fanboy comment. Different people have different requirements.

All the benchmarks I've seen put it at around a 7600gt. Great card but that's just not enough power if you want to play the newer games, I have one, I'm feeling it's age more than anything now. If OP isn't interested in games, or if games are secondary to other tasks, it should be mentioned. We can't work copiously on "Go". Opinions were asked for, and they were given.

OP: BTW more RAM doesn't equal better performance, it can if the card has the power to take advantage of higher texture settings, However a 8600gt is not one of these cards.

8600=50% of 8800 = crap
8500=50% of 8600 = bigger crap

Do the math! :P

And the first thing out of certain peoples mouths when someone disagrees with them is calling someone a fan boy. If you are stuck with a crap card, don't get pissed when someone calls it what it is.

If you are a person that does not play games, or does not use graphic intense programs, then of course a 8600 will work. But for most of US, that is not the case. Face the fact that most people here would prefer a good performer over a poor performer.

Sounds like a fan boy of the 8600 to me! :)
