Buzzing Sound

I'm not entirely sure this is a sound card problem, but this seems like the logical place to start.

There's a buzzing sound coming through my speakers as my computer boots into Windows. The sound persists until the computer is powered down. It seems to be intensified by CPU/Hard-drive activity.

1. The speakers don't buzz when the sound card is disconnected.

2. The sound card doesn't buzz in my old computer.

3. The buzzing sound starts as my computer loads Windows, not before.

4. My motherboard automatically sets the Corsair 1,600 MHz RAM to 1,333MHz; however, when I manually change it to 1,600 MHz, the buzzing sound is dramatically reduced. (Unfortunately it's still quite noticeable.)

This is the part that's confusing me:

5. The sound is present when my headphones are plugged into the sound card directly, and in fact, unplugging my mixer and speakers from the power outlet stops the buzzing sound coming through the headphones altogether. Strangely, switching the mixer off, but leaving it plugged into the power outlet, doesn't stop the buzzing sound coming through the headphones.

I've never come across a problem like this, and I've exhausted every possibility that I can think of, so any ideas at this point would be very much appreciated!

Here's a list of the components I'm using:

Intel Core i5 750
Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2
Antec TruePower 650W
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB
Corsair XMS3 DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600)
GeForce 8800 GT
M-Audio Delta 44 (PCI)
Wharfedale Diamond 8 Active Monitors

My compunter buzzes, but it`s only when the hard drive is active. It`s because of the surface my pc is on,so i push it on it`s side and it`s stop buzzing, till it`s vertical again.Try moving your pc when it is buzzing.

Hope i`ve helped:good:

Cheers for the reply.

Is the the buzzing sound coming from your speakers? It sounds like the hard-drive vibrating the chassis if the surface your computer is on is making a difference.

Hi Mopmop,
One thing came to my mind, outside of computer world.
With musical instruments, buzzing sound is often a sign of problem with grounding.

Thanks for the reply.

I have to admit that I don't know very much about ground loops, but I was starting to think that I could eliminate that option as everything is plugged into the same 6-way extension. Also, my old computer was completely buzz free when plugged into the same 6-way with all the other gear.

I had a bit of success by disabling C3/C6/C7 State Support in the BIOS, which seems to indicate motherboard/PSU coil whine according to the other threads I've read on the subject. It has noticeably reduced the buzzing, but I can still hear it when I turn the speakers up, which unfortunately, is going to be quite necessary for the music production I was planning to use this computer for.

I tried switching the PSU for the NesteQ in my old system, but the buzzing persisted.

Maybe time to try sending the motherboard back?
