Cable Internet adivce (hardware)

I have never used or installed a network that connects to the internet using cable before and have only used a normal phone line.

*Firsf off, are upload and download speeds equal, or are they like ADSL when its only 256mb up and x mbps down?

Im under the impreshion that to use cable, coaxial cables are used and not normal RJ11 connectors and phone line wires?

*Will i need a special cable router, or can i use one wich uses a normal RJ11 connector to connect to the outside line?
 
The speed all depends on the service that you purchased. You will no longer need to plug your house wiring into your modem. You won't need a special cable router either, as the ethernet will plug into your router just as it does when you have DSL.

That is a diagram of a plain ole' cable modem, you would plug your coaxial cable into that, then an RJ45 (ethernet cable) from the modem to your computer/router. If you are having the cable company set it up, then they will get it all working. If you are self installing then they'll give you all the directions and software, it's actually quite easy.
 
At the moment, my router just plugs straight in to the phone line through a filter.

Does this mean that a cable modem must be used before attatching it to a router? A sort of cable equivalent to a ADSL filter?

This would mean that your router is also a modem. I've seen this setup quite a few times with 2Wire products. You may need to buy a new router, unless your current one has an input for another modem.

If you purchase a networking package from your cable company, they would give you a combination modem/router to use in your home. If you do not purchase a networking package, they would just give you a modem. If all you receive is a modem, then you'll need to purchase a standalone router.

What brand and model number is the device that you plug your phone line into?

The device your using is a combination router and modem. If your going to being networking your cable connection, you'll have to buy a router, unless your cable company will provide you with a new router/modem combo that works with cable.
 
what you will get for the cable company will be a modem like the one in the pic above. that will attach to your tv cable, from there you will connect the ethernet port of the modem to the internet port on a Cable/DSL router with a Patch cord and then plug the computers into the router.
your cable company may give you a modem router combo if you ask for it and they sell one but I wouldnt ask for one. I would buy me a router.

cable internet does not use a " filter like DSL " and is faster then DSL depending on what speed you signup for.
the only down side to cable is you share bandwidth with all your neighbors
and that means the more neighbors you have that use cable internet the slower it will become.
