Cable Modem Splitter

I have a cable modem (Motorola surfboard) in my living room that's used by several people. I have a laptop in another room about 50 feet away that I'm currently using a phone line dial-up connection for.

Is there any way I can put an extra cable or some kind of splitter on my existing cable modem, and run a cable through the room in between so I can have cale Internet on my laptop too?

Thanks for any advice.

If you use a splitter the connection with the system in the living room would cancel out using the laptop. That would have to be turned off while you were connected. The addon of 50ft of cable could also see some signal loss. What you would need basically is a router for multiple systems to run on. Each one would be configured for a separate ip address so as not conflict with the other(s).

The easiest thing to do would probably be to go wireless. You can sometimes find good deals on wireless routers and wifi cards for about $50 or so. Otherwise, you could just go with a wired network. You'll still need either a router or a switch/hub and internet sharing setup on your main computer...

A setup where the living room system remains hard wired with a wireless hookup for the laptop could work. But that would a work of art for the type of custom setup you would need. Corded or wireless a router would be the winning ticket for this however. The more expensive route is to have jacks in different rooms for easy connection. The installation is what sees cost there.
