Cable modem

So I've been looking around for a new cable modem so I don't have to pay rental fees for comcast. Anyways, the modem that I have now has an rj-11 jack that I plug in to the jack on my wall so I can get phone service. Maybe I'm being stupid but all the cable modems that I've looked at do not have this jack. Do I need the rj-11 jack on the modem? If so could someone maybe find one that has it?
Thanks

Are you sure you have a cable modem and not a DSL modem? The only connectors you should have on a cable modem are the power connector, coax cable, ethernet cable and/or USB cable. The other possibility is you have a VoIP modem that connects your phones to the internet, but I haven't seen those before.

I'm sure it's cable. There's a coax line that goes in to it from the wall. What the phone jack does s provide me with phone service. If I don't have a cable from the modem plugged in to my phone jack on the wall I will still have internet, but I will not have phone service. Would it help if I took a picture?

That doesn't sound right, the phone line is a separate service and isn't fed over cable. Are you sure it's not for something else? Does the RJ-11 jack connect to your wall or to an actual phone?

It connects to the wall. I actually called comcast and it's an emta. A cable modem and a voip adapter in one package. So I have a new a new question. It doesn't seem like I can buy one of these anywhere, if I bought a cable modem and a voip adapter would that work fine?

Yeah, I thought it sounded like you had a phone/internet combo deal. I am not sure you can grab those third party yet - or at least one that Comcast supports. It is a pretty large unit with a battery backup in it too isn't it?

Comcast tends to be pretty particular about their VoIP adapters...

With roadrunner i know someone who used to have a standard modem that had a built in phone jack to it for their digital phone, but then they upgraded and they now have a dedicated one for the phone. Im not sure on comcasts policy, but can you purchase a modem from them directly, versus having to lease it?

I have road runner here, I had a Arris All in one cable modem that did both phone and net. But I bought my own Moderola modem and i am VERY pleased with it. Now the new modem is just for the net, And the arris modem is just for my phone. Seams to work very well that way. Anyway, I know someone who has com cast. They bought a Moderola modem just like my modem and they have no problem with it. So i am sure you can get any cable modem and it will work, Just call com cast first and ask if the model of modem you are looking at buying will work,. But i dont think you will have a problem with any of the new modems out there today,

Purchasing the modem from Comcast may be possible. I know they used to do it in the past.

Just curious, how much are they charging for rental? I remember it used to be something like $5 a month for just a cable modem. I assume it is more with the VoIP Box.

Thanks I'll look around and see what I can find, maybe one of my friends has a voip adapter that I can borrow.
They're only charging $6 a month for rental, but being the poor college student that I am I need every penny.

No problem. At least it isn't $10 or more...

I understand completely. Why not purchase something that you will most likely rent for several times its worth over the years...

My modem was $3 a month. But I own them. And I get the one free as a promotion for the phone. Here you cant add any VoIP modem or adapter unless its from Time Warner Cable, We can only put our own net modems on.
