i got comcast cable on saturday. i go to download something and it starts at 2000kbps. every second it goes down a couple hundred. after 15-20 seconds, its down to 200-300kbps. why is this? i tried the download for the tweak. ran the speed test on cnet and got 4500. whats wrong?

I don't think anything is wrong, because mine is like that too. A part of it might be that the website is capping your download speed though. The fastest I have downloaded regularly (not right at the start of the download) is about 500-600kb a second.

Cable modems are known to have a varying speed depending on how many users are online in any one area at the same time; bandwidth is shared, and the cable company will quote the best rates in their literature.

well they say its 3mb with an upgrade to the lines. it will be 4mb. but why does it start so high? my neighbor, a good friend if mine got comcast. the installer was a guy in his 20's. he was a nice guy, they started talkin and the installer decided to uncap his line for him. lucky sob.

Oh, maybe I had it wrong.
Your friend got really lucky, I wish mine would be uncapped too.. :(

jthepaintman7, you're extremely lucky getting even that speed. We don't have speeds like that is Australia, personally I'm still on 56kb dial up, and you think your downloads speeds are frustrating. Enjoy what you have.

Your speed reductions are caused by the contention ratio of your ISP, the greater it is (i.e. 100:1) then the more shared your bandwith is. A tip is to search around for ISP's who can guarantee 1:1 or even a 10:1 contention ratio. Then your download speed will resemble the type of speed your purchased.
