Can A "Clogged" Browser Affect Download Speed?

Greetings.

I have been using the Mozilla Firefox browser for the last 7 months with my new computer. I also use a wireless modem.

Early on, the transfer rate when I downloaded something off the internet was between 100 to 150 kbs. Now I notice that no matter what I try to download it is never any faster than 20 kbs and sometimes as low as 5 kbs.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be and how I can correct this? Is it possible that browsers get clogged and need to be cleaned out?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried one of the online speed tests such as speedtest.net to ensure you are getting a fair speed value? Any neighbours hijacking your connection (what security settings do you have for the wireless)? Do you have any software for monitoring connections to the Internet? Have you tried the (infamous) IE which I assume you don't have loaded up with extras? Any feedback from your ISP?
