Like say if I installed Avast! and Kaspersky could that stop both Avast! and Kaspersky?

Computer safety tips on how to keep computer(s) as safe as possible:

No illegally downloading anything.

Type a link(s) given to you for example http://www.computerforum.com/ type in.

If a friend(s), other(s) gives links ask if you see them that they show you the website in person first and if it is proven all safe then proceed on own computer.

If any downloads, other(s) are harmful put warning(s) on safe websites of yours, other(s) like as a made up example of warning: "CharacterMaker from c.co when you click on I then T and then downloadCharacterMaker is harmful please do not download this, thank you."

Do not click on Ads even if they say you are a winner it is (atleast almost always) a trick and can be harmful to your computer(s).

You can't have 2 active virus scanners installed at the same time. One may consider the other as a threat so its always best to only install one at a time.

Having two antivirus programs will conflict with each other but a good program to compliment any antivirus program would be Malwarebytes (Free version).
Cheers
