I've a HP laptop. NX 6110
the problem is when i on my computer i get this message......

1720 - SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure (Failing Attr: 05)
Please back up the contents of the hard drive and run HDD self test in F10 Setup

F10 = ROM Based Setup

I've formatted my computer twice, but still facing the same problem. i've run the HDD self test several times, not it did not pay. Please suggest any solution so that i don't get this pathetic message just when i start it.

Your hard drive is most likely failing. SMART is a hard drive diagnostic tool built into the hard drive. Here is a way to check whats wrong.

Download Speedfan, http://www.almico.com/speedfan431.exe

Install it.
Start it up and then select the S.M.A.R.T. Tab.
Click the small arrow and select your hard drive.
Then click "Perform and in-depth online analysis of this hard disk"

Take a look and see what is had to say. If it says you have a problem with your hard drive, you will most likey have to get a new one.

And just a little tip, if you haven't backed up yet and you need anything on the HDD, then you better back it up if you still can. It will get harder and harder to access that drive.

no i don't think so that i need to get a new one.. anywayz i will do the test and will let u know, but if there is any other option please tell me, i don't wanna change my hard drive, i bought this laptop 3 months ago, howz it possible that the hardrive has started troubling :(?

if you don't want to get a new hard drive, then disable s.m.a.r.t. in the bios and you won't get the error message anymore. ;)

like said... SMART is a hdd problem detection system. It sais you hdd is dieing,. thats why its giving the message. so, you can disable SMART so you dont get the message anymore, however, that wouldnt fix the drive it really is dieing.. ;)
so seriously.. back everything up you have to backup, and disable smart if you want to still use the drive. however,.. if you bought the laptop only a few months ago.. I gues there is still warranty on it.. so i would return to the shop where you bought it, and i think you should get a new HDD in the laptop.

how this could have happened? perhaps the laptop was dropped sometime... HDD's really cant take much when they're spinning.
